You are absolutely right to be concerned about how to get rid of wrinkles under eyes because they are the first signs of skin aging. The very fine wrinkles you have that might not be very noticeable just yet will certainly become worse and turn into crow ’s feet that are more noticeable if not treated early.

The same is true for dark bags or circles under the eyes or around it. This is because the skin around our eyes is very thin and one of the most sensitive skin cells in our bodies. This makes the eye are very vulnerable to damage for a variety or reasons.

Under Eye Wrinkles Causes

One of the main causes of wrinkles is facial movements that we do on a regular basis such as laughing, smiling squinting, frowning and furrowing brows. Although no health expert would advise you to stop smiling or laughing, you should definitely minimize frowning, squinting and furrowing your brows.

Aside from these, environmental factors such as too much exposure to sun, smoke and other pollutants also cause under eye wrinkles. The bright sun certainly causes too much squinting because it hurts the eyes. Also, too much sun exposure dries out the skin and ages it more quickly.

Smoke and other pollutants can cause even more damage because they contain free radicals that cause skin damage. Smokers are more prone to under eye wrinkles, but exposure to second hand smoke and pollution also cause continuous skin damage.

Some eye skin damage can also have a specific cause such as puffy eyes, which are caused by poor fluid drainage that causes fluid build up. Or genetics might be the primary culprit in your under eye wrinkles and shadows.

In addition, bad habits such as rubbing the eyes, inappropriate use of eye makeup, not drinking enough water, not getting enough sleep and exercise can also cause damage in the skin area.

Although nothing can be done about genetics, plenty can be done to prevent further damage. For instance, you should keep in mind that rubbing the eyes bruises the cells around your eyes, causing dark circles.

Lack of hydration, sleep and exercise will lead to poor skin elasticity and dehydration, which all contributes to wrinkles. Although aging naturally reduces skin elasticity from collagen and elastin loss, this can be sped up by an unhealthy lifestyle.

Conversely, skin aging can be slowed down by choosing to eat well, get adequate sleep and exercise regularly.

Preventing Wrinkles Under The Eyes

Fortunately, there are a number of good treatment options for under eye wrinkles, eye bags and puffy skin. But before you even start thinking about treatment, focus on prevention to stop ongoing damage.

As we have previously discussed, getting enough sleep is one of the most important factors to prevent wrinkles.

Aside from this, you should also work to limit exposure to pollution. Since this is not always possible, make sure that you have eye protection when you do venture out. Make sure you wear dark glasses to protect against squinting and put on a good eye cream with sun protection.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, taking special care to remove eye make up gently and switch to hypoallergenic products that do not cause itching or irritation.

Make sure that you are well hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water daily. Sleeping with a humidifier also helps if your skin is naturally dry.

Choose to eat healthy by incorporating fruits and vegetables in your diet. These are very high in anti-oxidants and will help your body to fight free radicals inside and out.

Natural Treatment Options for Eye Wrinkles

Aside from prevention, there are also plenty of natural home remedies that can help fight against under eye skin damage. These include the following:

•    Vitamin E – long known to fight skin aging, vitamin E is a powerful partner in minimizing existing wrinkles and preventing new ones from forming. Squeeze out a small amount from a capsule and apply directly under the eyes at bedtime.

Chemical and Medical Treatment Options

Aside from natural home remedies, there are also several chemical and medical treatment options for getting rid of under eye wrinkles quickly and effectively.

The easiest option would be to use a vitamin A-based topical retinoid. These have been known to be very effective in treating wrinkles because they boost collagen production and increase cell turnover significantly, which contributes to cell renewal.

For fairly shallow wrinkles, diamond microdermaabrasion is also a quick and effective way to reduce under eye wrinkles by gently removing the top layer of the skin.

For deeper wrinkles, botox is a good alternative. Botox treatments consist of a neurotoxin injection every 3 to 4 months. It is quick, very effective and safe when performed by a professional.

If you are concerned about the health risks of botox treatments, dermal filler may be injected instead or a non-ablative laser under eye treatment used. This is a good option for under eye wrinkles because the laser is gentle enough to be used around the sensitive eye area but is effective enough in boosting collagen levels.

For serious under eye damage, lower eyelid surgery offers an effective solution and permanent solution although there are associated risks, like any other surgical procedure.
