4 At-Home Treatments For More Beautiful Glowing Skin
I’ve been on a quest for perfect skin since the age of 15.
Even though I come from a long line of women with great skin, I wasn’t blessed with the creamiest, dreamiest complexion. I’ve been fighting dullness, dryness, acne, stress and everything in between. But if there’s one thing that I’ve learned through all of my skincare experimentation, it’s this—you don’t have to spend a fortune to get healthier skin.
Sure, the department store has products with flashy packaging and hefty price tags that promise you’ll have skin as smooth as the day you were born. But the only thing that is guaranteed is your money in the manufacturers’ pockets. You can find great skincare products at the drugstore, discount retailers and even health food stores. Or if you’d prefer to take a more hands-on approach, you can make your own.
Here are a few natural facial mask and scrub recipes that you can make quickly and cheaply with items that you probably have in your cabinets and refrigerator.
To brighten your complexion, go bananas. Mash one half of a banana and combine it with one tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of sour cream. Apply and let the mask sit for 10 minutes. Gently remove the mask with a warm washcloth.
Brown sugar doesn’t just make your oatmeal taste better. It actually is a great natural exfoliant. If you don’t have any on hand, you can use basic refined white sugar instead. Combine ½ cup of brown sugar with ½ cup of honey, one tablespoon of olive or coconut oil and one drop of your favorite essential oil, like lavender, rose or bergamot. Gently apply to your skin using a circular motion. Rinse with warm water and press skin lightly with a warm washcloth. Be sure to moisturize afterward.
Tell dullness and irritation to beat it with this simple, yet effective mask. This treatment is suitable for all skin types, and is good for moisturizing and soothing. Take two egg whites, and mix them with two tablespoons of plain yogurt (plain Greek yogurt works, too). Leave the mask on for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water.
The next time you make guacamole, you might want to save some for your face. Why? Avocado does wonders for dry skin. For this mask, just take one half of a very ripe, soft avocado and mash it to a creamy pulp. Mix with ¼ cup of honey, and apply to skin. Allow mask to sit for 10 minutes, then remove with a washcloth and cool water.
